  17. <p>    The first U.S. President to be assassinated was Abraham
  18. Lincoln -- or was it Zachary Taylor? Last week the coroner in
  19. Louisville exhumed the body of the 12th President, who died on
  20. July 9, 1850, five days after consuming a large amount of iced
  21. cherries and milk at a sweltering Independence Day celebration
  22. at the Washington Monument. Back then, Taylor's sudden death was
  23. attributed to gastroenteritis. But Clara Rising, a Florida
  24. writer who is researching a book about Taylor, believes he may
  25. have been murdered.

  27. <p>    Samples of Taylor's hair, bones and fingernails will be
  28. tested for traces of arsenic poisoning. If any are found, they
  29. would strengthen Rising's theory that Taylor was killed by
  30. proslavery Southerners angered by his support for the admission
  31. of California and New Mexico into the Union as free states. Said
  32. Dabney Taylor, the President's great-great-great grandson:
  33. "Rumors have been running through the family for years. I'm just
  34. glad somebody is finally going to do something about it." The
  35. prime suspects: Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky, Vice President
  36. Millard Fillmore and two unnamed Georgia politicians.
